Memory Two. (Day 285)

[personal profile] overworker 2020-09-14 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
You have to stand up on grandpa's chair to turn off the light, and even then you have to stretch your fingers with a tiny grunt in order to grasp the pull string. With a satisfying click, the lamp goes out and the room is cloaked in darkness. With a happy sigh, you hop down and scoot over to the window, where a large telescope is set up; curtains drawn back so you can stare at the sky.

There are books upon books piled at your feet; several are open to different pages with colored tabs marking the ones you want to remember.

Outside, the sky is beautiful. There's a darkness that's only filtered through by the moon and stars. For some reason, the view of that vast space fills you with warmth. It's interesting and exciting and you don't want to look away.

For hours you sit there; gazing at the stars and reading page upon page from your grandfather's books. They're old, but ever so well cared for. And there's so much information in them. You could spend years in here and still not absorb it all. His study is your favorite room in the whole house. You spend more time here than anywhere else.

But as much as your spirit longs for it, you eventually start to drift. You don't know when you fell asleep but minute after minute you slowly find yourself closer to the floor; until you're sprawled out on it.

In the dark of the night, your grandfather finds you with your face in a book, with your arms curled around it; peacefully sleeping. There are lines on your face and arms but you haven't moved an inch in hours. Chuckling, he picks you up in his arms and carries you back to your room with the book you'd been so attached to.

After he lays you in bed, he sets the book on your desk with a smile.

That night your dreams are filled with beautiful images of the cosmos. And when you wake, you see that the book you were reading is still there. When you ask your grandfather he simply smiles and says "It's yours now."
